Let's Do Something Fabulous

I wrote this post a month or so back, but I think it's very fitting for this time of year. The photos I chose to go along with this post are some that I've taken in the past few years. To me, they represent different times of adventure in my life and here's hoping there'll be many more to come.
So here's some New Years inspiration:

Do you ever read an article on someone that you find absolutely spectacular? Someone that's so inspiring and makes you go "Wow, I would love to do that" or "I would love to make that kind of impact." I go to school with some incredibly talented people -- people whose writing flows like no other, artists that make jaw-dropping work seem effortless, unreal athletes, etc (the list goes on forever). There are legitimately people who have gone to the Olympics (casual, right?).

I recently read an article about a girl from my school who wrote her own book and is in the process of getting it published. Like what? That's insane and wonderful (insanely wonderful?). A professional speaker also visited one of my classes and was talking about accomplishing your dreams. She asked us to picture our ideal future, even one that you think is unachievable. She then emphasized that you can achieve those exact futures if that's what you desire.

She said, "HOW, not if."

Why should any of us settle for anything less than our dreams? I may be young, but I know I want to do something incredible, I want to do something fabulous. It's just a matter of being confident in yourself, your abilities, and knowing that if you spend your time figuring out HOW instead of always relying on "if this" and "if that", you can do anything.

What impact are you going to leave on the world?

A Year In Review

At 2am a year ago today, I decided to start a blog.

You guys, that is so unreal to me. One sleepless night turned into my little blog that I love so much. I guess what seems the craziest to me is that I stuck to it. Not that I'm a quitter, but it's so easy to make a delirious spur of the moment decision at 2am. Sometimes those decisions don't seem as great in the morning when you wake up, but luckily that wasn't the case. I am so passionate about my blog and I can't even tell you how great it feels when my pen just keeps going and all the ideas and creativity in me comes to life (I say pen because I usually write my posts out on paper before I type them up).

I've been told that I smile when I write. Today my best friend asked me, "How are you feeling?" My response: "I'm feeling really good! I've studied a bit and written two new blog posts. You know I'm doing well if I can blog." Word for word, people.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to those of you who read and/or leave sweet comments. It means the world to me.

So as another reflection on my year of blogging, here are a few things that have happened to me and/or changed in the past 12 months:
  • I've made friends in college that I can't imagine my life without
  • I am a sister of Kappa Delta sorority
  • I successfully completed my freshman year and started my sophomore year
  • My little brother graduated middle school and started high school (CRAZY)
  • I had my first internship
  • I am Sunshine Chair of my sorority
  • I am an ambassador for the College of Communication at my school
THANK YOU again everyone! Let's have another awesome year together.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday morning everyone!

Grab a nice hot (or cold) cup of coffee/tea/beverage of your choice, eat your favorite healthy breakfast, get dressed in something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to tackle the day, and have a fantastic Monday. The first day of the school/work week can be a drag sometimes, but make today a good one!

Sending you all positive vibes!

Classic & Simple Autumn Makeup | Taupe Eyes & Berry Lips

In the fall I am all about the taupe and berry tones in terms of makeup. I find that they compliment each other really well and aren't overwhelming on my fair skin.

Now there are plenty of days where I don't wear makeup because:
1) I'm in college so lazy days happen
2) If I'm going to the gym in the morning, makeup is NOT necessary
3) I really hate taking off makeup at night...
4) It's nice to give your skin a breather!

BUT this is my go-to "fancier" makeup look during the fall (and probably seasons to come).
For a more everyday look, apply the lipstick with your finger and it gives a subtle berry tint (which is what I'll normally do for daytime wear).

Note: the lipstick photographs on the red side, but it's more berry/vampy in person.

E Y E S :
MAC Satin Taupe (aka my favorite eyeshadow of all time)
Urban Decay Hustle (in the Naked Palette)
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Black
L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black

L I P S :
Rimmel London Lasting Finish Lipstick in 124 Bordeaux

I think this would be a great look for the upcoming holiday season!

Rainy Day Guide

“October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces.”
- J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I thought this was an extremely appropriate quote since October is coming to an end, and we've had quite some rain in New England over the past few weeks. Plus, J.K. Rowling -- enough said.

I've always said that I love the rain when I'm sleeping (seriously, how soothing is the sound of rain when you're warm and cuddled up under piles of blankets?). But when the rain continues on throughout the day, it can definitely be a bummer. It also brings out my lazy side. Going to the dining hall seems like so much more effort when you have to get all bundled up and trudge along in the rain (hopefully not getting wet in the process).

Here's my guide to a wonderful rainy day in!

You will need:
○ Your choice of a book, Netflix, or arts and craft activity (or all of the above)
○ Fuzzy socks
○ A cozy blanket
○ A cup of tea (I'm particularly enjoying the Sleepytime Decaf Blackberry Pomegranate Green Tea at the moment)
○ A rainy day playlist (aka any playlist that makes you want to get up and dance)

Putting it all together:
Make yourself a cup of tea, put on your fuzzy socks, grab your entertainment of choice, crawl into bed under that cozy blanket of yours (cup of tea beside you), and enjoy the sound of the rain hitting the windowpane.

Take your next rainy day as an opportunity to relax and give yourself a mental break!

Trader Joe's Grocery Haul

I recently made a trip to Trader Joe's and picked up some things for my dorm room! I'm not normally super hungry in the mornings, or hungry enough to go to the dining hall, so I'll usually eat a granola bar on my way to class; this explains why the majority of what I bought is bars and cereal. I also picked up some snacks that are dorm friendly aka don't expire too quickly, easy to eat, etc.

Produce items like apples and bananas I can just take from the dining hall, so there's no need for me to buy any from the grocery store (YAY for saving money! Kinda...)

Fun Fact: I really enjoy going food shopping. Is that strange? Dreaming of the year I'll have a kitchen while at school.

What are your favorite things to snack on?

Autumn Lovin'

I feel like as little kids our favorite season was summer -- no hesitations -- because after all, what is more torturous to a 7 year old than school? Summer = no school = a little kid's dream. I can't deny that summer will always be a magical season in that sense; it's all about relaxation and having fun. What's not to love?

Over the years my answer to "what's your favorite season?" has changed, and I am very enthusiastic about my love for the fall. It's even starting to smell like fall! (Quick shoutout to Bath and Body Works for making the most perfect scents to capture this time of year). Just the thought of sweaters, scarves, crunchy and colorful leaves, cozy nights in, and the holidays makes me so happy! Oh and I can't forget Starbucks peppermint mochas (I know peppermint is more winter than fall, but hey it's great! And I know pumpkin spice is the expected answer).

It's been getting a bit more crisp, which is such a relief after a swelling first week of classes, and I'm already pulling out some of my fall favorites! Bring on the dark nails and berry lips!

I've also been dying to go apple picking for months and I believe I'll be going sometime in October (cross your fingers). I think the process of apple picking, and the entire environment of it, is so lovely. The orchards are beautiful and you can have some nice apple cider when you're done (or an apple cider doughnut!).

I wish I could find the words to show how excited I am, but I really can't. Just imagine giddiness, lots of jumping up and down, and endless energy for autumn adventures!

School Bag Essentials

From experience, these are the items that I find myself needing most when walking around campus or throughout the day at school. They're obviously not necessary, but nothing is worse than brutally chapped lips in the middle of a long lecture (or worse, a growling stomach), getting your monthly gift while out and about, being in desperate need of cash for whatever reason, etc -- you get the picture. Stick all these in a little pouch, throw it in your school bag, and you're good to go! Crisis averted.

Gum, oil blotting sheets, 20 dollars (emergency money), feminine products, hand sanitizer, lip balm, comb, hair ties, sample size or rollerball perfume, headphones, granola bar.

The comb and rollerball aren't pictured because I seem to have misplaced them!

Accessory or Gadget?

I've only ever used the free pair of Apple headphones that you get with iPods, iPhones, and what not. They work well enough and since I'm not a runner I didn't need to worry about finding more legit headphones that would securely stay in my ear (anyone else agree that the Apple ones just fall right out even when you're not doing anything?).

I had been seeing quite a few people indulge in Frends headphones recently, but I honestly knew nothing about the brand or quality of their products. All I knew was that they were the most stylish headphones I had ever seen. After doing some research, I found out that one of the ideas behind Frends was to make headphones that could essentially be accessories, which makes perfect sense.

The best part is that style does not come at the sacrifice of quality. I decided to splurge on a pair myself, and after finding this pair in collaboration with We Are Handsome, it was a lost cause for my wallet. They're genuinely extremely well made headphones that do everything you'd want and expect them to (especially for the price): cancel out noise, give great sound, fit comfortably, etc. One aspect that is perfect for me is that they're small enough to fit my head! I have quite a small head and that's usually a problem for me with things like hats and headphones and what not. Two huge thumbs up for Frends!

DIY Wall of Frames

I've been seeing these "Wall of Frames" all over the place and I absolutely love them. I really wanted to make one for my dorm room so I did just that (as you can tell since it is now a blog post), but I used very light wooden frames that aren't exactly meant to be picture frames, or maybe they are, but they don't have backing. Either way, I wanted to use these because I knew they'd be easy to hang up with command strips once I move in, and I'm so happy with the way they turned out.

So let's jump into how I did it!

To start off, you're going to need your frames of choice and either paint or spray paint. If you decide to go with paint, you'll need some brushes and a paper plate as well as a surface to paint on like a magazine, newspaper, or garbage bag (personally I recommend a garbage bag so it doesn't stick), and Mod Podge to seal everything as well as make it glossy. If you decide on spray paint then you'll just need a surface to paint on.

I decided to go with spray paint since I find it much easier to use. I laid out a garbage bag in my backyard (you want to do this somewhere with good ventilation -- outside is best) and weighed down the edges with rocks so that it wouldn't blow away or blow onto the drying paint. I then sprayed each frame with a few even coats of spray paint and left them to dry.

Once your frames are painted and dry, all you need are some pictures to put in them! I found most of my pictures from Tumblr, printed them out, cut them down to size, and use tape to secure them in the back.

And this is the finished product! So simple and quick.
Let me know if you guys try it out or if you've been as into this "decor trend", if you will, as I am!
